GENERAL SUMMARY

Under direction performs a variety of skilled work in painting, carpentry and the general maintenance and repair of buildings, facilities, and equipment. Our graffiti abatement crews follow a 30-50-mile daily route covering 12 square miles in Los Angeles City Council District 9. With high crime rates and 55 known gangs along our route, we remove 80,000 square feet of graffiti per week. Our daily route includes commercial corridors and residential streets. We also respond to calls from residents, businesses, the City Attorney’s office, the Los Angeles Police Department, and the City Council office. Our crews use high-tech power-washing and painting to remove and cover graffiti. We capture, filter, and re-use our water from block to block, preventing the release of dirty water into streets and storm drains. We use non-toxic citrus-based cleansers.

The Paint Technician is required to coach, teach and supervise program interns and community service workers. Perform a variety of skilled and unskilled manual tasks associated with but not limited to Interior/ Exterior Painting as well as graffiti abatement.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:

• Use brush or spray gun in applying all types of paint products or other protective or decorative finishes to all types of surfaces, including buildings and furniture.

• Scrapes, sand, fills, plasters, or in some manner prepares surfaces for painting and repainting.

• Match, blend, harmonize and contrast colors.

• Applies under and finish coats.

• Erect, rig or move scaffolding and platforms.

• Clean brushes, tools and other equipment.

• Paint signs.

• Training interns and community service workers to develop healthy work habits, learn

discipline and understand and implement Work Safety Training

• Teaching interns mathematical concepts as they relate to work (i.e., measuring square footage) and learn how to use the following equipment: Paint Sprayers, Color Matching Machine, Pressure Washer and Sand Blaster

• Training interns on the skilled and unskilled manual task associated with graffiti abatement

• Supervise and coach young people in a professional manner while in the field

• Follow staff code of conduct and abide by all rules and regulations associated with the participation of young people in our program

• Removing or concealing graffiti using specialized chemicals, paints, solvents, soda blasting or other appropriate methods

• Operating a variety of hand or power tools and equipment

• Cleaning and maintaining brushes, rollers, sprayers, and other tools and equipment

• Collecting litter/refuse/recyclables from scheduled routes and festival/special event sites

• Performing maintenance, replacement, and cleaning of litter containers as required

• Preparing and maintaining reports, records, activity logs, work orders and compiling statistical data

• Establishing and maintaining a positive working relationship with the public, interns, volunteers, and other local business owners

• Adhering to safety and environmental regulations and work procedures

• Performing pre-trip inspections and following regular scheduled maintenance on vehicles and equipment

• Reporting vehicle and equipment defects to Supervisors

• Assisting with the graffiti Inventory

• Performing related duties as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Clearance

a. Must be able to pass drug test.

b. Must have responsible means of transportation to get to work

c. Clean driving record: No suspensions or DUI’s for 6 months; No more than 3 points in 10 years or 2 points within the last 3 years.

Experience and Training

a. 2-4 Professional Painting Experience (Commercial/Residential).

b. Satisfactory performance as Maintenance I worker for six (6) months or more

c. 10 hour OSHA Certification.

d. Customer Service

e. Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and ability.

• Experience: 0-6 months of maintenance experience within a specialized trade area or Certification and/or degree in related field

Knowledge of:

a. Principles, procedures, skills, tools and materials used in specialized trade areas. b. Uses and purposes of general maintenance tools and equipment.

c. Applicable codes, rules and regulations pertaining to trade areas.

d. Safe work practices.

e. Basic first aid.

Skill & Ability to:

a. Perform skilled maintenance, construction and repair work in the area of work assigned. b. Use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools and equipment.

c. Work independently in the absence of supervision.

d. Follow oral and written directions.

e. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Physical Requirements

a. Ability to read work orders, diagrams, labels and other printed material for safe operation of equipment.

b. Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels in person, on the telephone, and or on two-way radio.

c. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form; receive and give instructions.

d. Ability to operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools and equipment.

e. Ability to routinely lift/carry equipment and supplies weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds and

to occasionally lift/carry equipment and supplies weighing up to seventy-five (75).

f. Ability to stand for a long period of time.

g. Ability to wear appropriate safety equipment, including mask, respirator, safety glasses and/or goggles, ear protectors, protective hat, gloves, coveralls, etc. as required.

h. Ability to follow oral and written directions.

i. Ability to establish and maintain friendly, cooperative and effective working relationships with all persons contacted in the course of work.

j. Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.

This is a full-time, non-exempt position with an annual salary wage range of $18.00-21.00 per/hr. (Based on experience)
